5 Reasons You Are Missing Out By Not Using Jetpack

In this week’s video, we go over the plugin jetPack. This is a controversial topic, but I hope you can see the other side. Here is the transcript of the video found above.

[00:00:00] Hello everyone. Welcome to Taylor’s Tech Talks. Today we’re going to be talking all things Jetpack. For those who have never been to Taylor’s tech talks, welcome. My name is Taylor Arndt and I’m a freelance accessibility professional, WordPress developer, and consultant. I have been in the industry for three years. My goal is to help customers and companies to be more inclusive and get online .

We’re doing a series called WordPress Wednesdays and we’ve taken a little bit of a hiatus , due to the fact that we were reconstructing the website. We are back. And what we’re going to be doing today is we’re going to be talking a little bit about a controversial topic. Don’t click off this video because you do not want to miss this.

We’re going to be talking about Jetpack. What is Jetpack You may ask? Jetpack is a WordPress plugin. As a refresher, a plugin is a feature that will help [00:01:00] extend or add new functionality to a website. There are a ton of plugins out there.

But today I want to talk about one in particular Jetpack. Jetpack is a plugin made by the company that makes wordpress.com automatic. It has so many different features. Like I said, it’s called jet pack for a reason. Today, I want to talk about five reasons why you probably are missing out if you’re not using this plugin.

Now, a lot of people in the WordPress community do not like Jetpack because it’s made by Automatic who makes wordpress.com the proprietary version. And so they really have some hard feelings towards it but I’m hoping today that I can change your mind and show you why you are missing out.

Jetpack has a lot of different features to offer. Some of these can include widgets for your site, like testimonials, portfolio projects, social media icons, posting to your social media [00:02:00] accounts, integration with wordpress.com for the blogs that you can post to different things. Jetpack stats , image optimization, security and so on and so forth. It’s just kind of a mix of different features. There are a lot of different features in Jetpack.

Number one is that it will help you to be able to cut down on the number of plugins you need for your site. What do I mean? Because jet pack has so many amazing features, you don’t have to have 15 to 20 plugins to try to replace it, right? Because if I didn’t use Jetpack, I would have to have a social media poster plugin, and then I’d want a plugin to try to integrate with my wordpress.com account.

Then I need a plugin to try to measure my site for uptime. And then I need one to try to do my social media widgets. You get the point. With Jetpack, I have it all in one little bundle. I don’t [00:03:00] have to have 15 to 20 plugins that are probably not accessible for me to use on my site because Jetpack can do all those things. That’s kind of a very powerful thing. Right?

Number two is that JetPack gives you a lot of features for free. Whereas if you were to do some of these other plugins, you would have to pay big money. Think about paying all this stuff like 15 times, right? 15 times 10, for example, right? You wouldn’t want to have to pay that. Would you? For all the features that jet pack offers for free. I’m just making up 15 as a general number, but you get the point. I don’t want to have to try to come up with all those different plugins and then have to pay them individually. Whereas I can get Jetpack for free, or at least the features that I’m going to be talking about today.

This one basically means that the price.

Number three is that I get social media [00:04:00] widgets that are fully accessible. What do I mean by this? Well, let’s say that I want to embed some social media icons onto my footer. I can do that with Jetpack. If I go to the Jetpack settings, I can be able to add some extra widgets. If I go into writing and then I can have those show up and I get a ton of widgets. Like for example, testimonials portfolio projects. It’s just kind of a cool little area there.

Number four is that I can connect with Google search console within Jetpack. So it’s pretty cool because I don’t even have to do all that verification nonsense. Remember all those tokens and nonsense? That’s not needed anymore. Folks, if you just connect

[00:05:00] right through jet pack, you can actually connect to the Google search console.

Thus, getting really good analytics within Jetpack.

Number five is a tie between two. I could not choose which one I wanted to include more. Here we go. Number five is uptime monitoring and stats. So uptime monitoring. Let’s see, my site goes down. I get an instant notification email and I can fix it and I can see what went wrong.

Whereas if I just published a new post and I want to see how good my stats, I can do that as well.

I know that this is going to be a controversial video, but those are my five reasons why you probably are missing out on using Jetpack. If you enjoyed this video and podcasts, please feel free to like, comment, share, subscribe.
